why you should take maternity photos

As a society, we’re consciously choosing to raise fewer kids, but providing them with more individualized love and attention. So as a future mama, treat yourself to capturing this precious time of your life via maternity photos!

You can easily Google “maternity photographer (insert city you live in)” but—and that’s a huge but—anything with the “maternity” descriptor usually means jacked up prices (also, “wedding” has the same effect).

So what you’re paying for is props and maternity costumes. And if you’re not one to love the long silky robes, do something more unique.

This was one of my inspo photos, and here’s how mine turned out:

Here’s my argument to convince you to consider maternity photos. And if you need help with organizing the shoot, check out my Ultimate Guide to Photo Shoots.

1. Maternity Photos are a Rare Opportunity

You’re only pregnant for 9 months. And what most photographers recommend is only a four week time gap (between 28 to 36 weeks) to take the photos. I would actually say that you might be pretty uncomfortable at 36 weeks, and given the chance you might deliver earlier than expected… narrow it down to latest 32 weeks.

Plus, if you decide on an outdoor shoot and the weather doesn’t hold up, you might have to rebook. So, when all is said and done… it’s actually a really rare and precious moment!

2. You’ll be a Different Person after Giving Birth

I remember feeling despondent about this set of photos, something kinda dumb like I did my makeup wrong. She said, in return, “You can always do it next time.” If there even is a next time, I’ll be a different person—physically, mentally, emotionally, and style-wise.

3. Give Yourself a(nother) Reason to Dress up

Everyone places a disproportionate emphasis on their big (wedding) day, and misses out on all the other moments in life. This is one of them. Instead of putting all your eggs in one basket. Similiarly, don’t just celebrate your anniversary once a year, no one says you can’t celebrate monthly! Create more opportunities in your life you can express yourself and take beautiful photos.

I hope these are reasons enough to document this special time in your life. If you have any questions, please reach out!
